Bob Kaplan

Robert “Bob” Phillip Kaplan ( PC , QC ; born December 27, 1936 in Toronto , Ontario ; † November 5, 2012 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons for more than 23 years and a solicitor for more than 23 years General was.

After attending school, Kaplan completed a course of study, which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1958 . He completed another law degree at the University of Toronto in 1961 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and, after being admitted to the bar in 1963, began working as a lawyer , barrister and solicitor .

In the general election of June 25, 1968 , Kaplan was elected for the first time as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the Don Valley constituency, but lost this constituency in the following election on October 30, 1972 . During this time he was last vice-chairman between October 1970 and February 1972 and then chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs from February to September 1972.

On July 8, 1974 he was again and represented in this up to the 1993 general election the constituency of York Center . After he was briefly again vice-chairman, he was again chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs between September 1974 and October 1976.

In October 1975 he took over his first government office when he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of National Health and Welfare and then from October 1976 to September 1977 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance. Subsequently, between October 18, 1977 and March 26, 1979, Kaplan was again chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs.

On June 30, 1980, Kaplan was appointed Solicitor General to the 22nd Canadian Cabinet by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau . He also retained the office of Solicitor General in the 23rd government of Canada formed by Trudeau's successor, John Turner, between June 30 and September 16, 1984 .

Opposition politician, economic manager and honorary consul

After the Liberal Party's defeat in the general election on September 4, 1984 , Kaplan took on numerous functions in the opposition and was initially spokesman for his parliamentary group for justice between October 1984 and September . In addition, he served as co-chairman of the Joint Standing Committee of the Parliament of Canada for regulations and other legal instruments between November 1984 and October 1988 and at the same time co-chair of the Joint Standing Parliamentary Committee for the control of regulations from September 1986 to October 1988.

At the same time he was from January 1988 to February 1989 first spokesman and then until September 1990 vice-spokesman for relations between the federal government and the provinces of Canada. He was also the spokesman for human rights from February 1989 to September 1990, before he was the opposition spokesman for energy, mining and resources between September 1990 and 1992.

After leaving the House of Commons, he worked as an economic manager for Kazakh companies such as the director of PetroKazakhstan Inc. , Platexco Inc. and Rex Diamond Mining Corporation . He was also Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Canada and received the Order of Kazakhstan for his services. In 2004, Kaplan finally became a member of the board of directors of European Goldfields , a Canada-based company dedicated to the acquisition, exploration and development of mineral resources in Romania and the Balkan Peninsula .
