Bob Whitlock (bass player)
Bob Whitlock , actually Von Varlynn Whitlock , (born January 21, 1931 in Roosevelt , Utah , † June 30, 2015 in Long Beach ) was an American bassist of West Coast jazz .
Live and act
As a young musician, Bob Whitlock had accompanied Lena Horne in 1947 , played with Steve White in 1949 and in Charlie Barnet's band in the early 1950s when Gerry Mulligan brought him into his band: he recommended Mulligan to his friend Chet Baker , who then, like Chico Hamilton belonged to the original line-up of his quartet (heard on titles like Nights At The Turntable or Lullaby of the Leaves ). He worked in 1952 in the band of Art Pepper and Russ Freeman and looked at the photographs of Savoy with (Surf Ride) .
That same year he played at the session at The Trade Winds Club with Harry Babasin , Dave Pell , Sonny Criss , Wardell Gray , Lawrence Marable and Chet Baker. In the mid-1950s he worked on the album Getz and the Cool Sounds by Stan Getz . In 1957 he played in a trio with Joe Albany and Warne Marsh (The Right Combination) . Whitlock also had a quartet of his own and taught music theory at the University of California. In 1961 he worked in Paris, in 1965/6 he was on tour with George Shearing's quintet , in 1966 he played with Joe Pass (Simplicity) ; after that no further recordings are known.
Bob Whitlock should not be confused with the hockey player (* 1949) of the same name or the keyboard player Bobby Whitlock (* 1948).
