Bockhorst  [ bɔkhɔʁst ] is a district of Versmold and is located directly on the Lower Saxony state border in the northwest of the district of Gütersloh , North Rhine-Westphalia . history

Bockhorst (from "Beukenhorst" = Buchenhorst ) is first mentioned in documents from the 13th century. The village was probably a vicariate of the Dissen parish. In the Ravensberger Urbar of 1556 37 farmers are named, most of whose farm names have survived to the present day.

On January 1, 1973, the community of Bockhorst was incorporated into the city of Versmold.

Reduced replica of the triumphal cross

The originally single-nave, Romanesque building from the 13th century with a semicircular apse and west tower was enlarged in the shape of a cross in the east in 1893. The historical color of the interior was restored in 1978/79.

Triumphal cross

The larger than life triumphal cross from around 1200 was discovered in 1893 during renovation work on the church attic and has been in the Westphalian State Museum in Münster since 1894 . In this representation, Christ does not wear a crown of thorns, but the "crown of heaven" as a sign of triumph. The original is 3.50 m high and 2.20 m wide. A scaled-down replica now adorns the altar.

The church square is framed by well-preserved half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, which used to be used as granaries. The buildings on the north side are used as apartments, those on the south side as a restaurant.

Backhaus and Kotten

In 1982 a small bakery with a fully functional stone oven was rebuilt near the Meyer Peter farm. The oven is used several times a year to bake bread or pastries. In the immediate vicinity, another half-timbered house , the Bockhorster Kotten , was built in 2000 , which is used for various village events as well as for civil weddings.

Nature reserve

The approx. 70 hectare nature reserve Salzenteichs Heide extends northeast of the village center  .
