Boischatel is located on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River at the foot of the Laurentine Mountains . Most of the settlement (which has grown together with that of the neighboring city of Québec) is located on an elevated plateau with steep flanks, around 80 to 120 meters above the narrow shoreline. The Rivière Montmorency forms the western municipal boundary; shortly before it flows into the Saint Lawrence River, it pours over the 83 m high Montmorency Falls .

Neighboring municipalities are Québec in the west, Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval in the north, L'Ange-Gardien in the east and Saint-Pierre-de-l'Île-d'Orléans in the south.

history

The municipality originally belonged to L'Ange-Gardien . Because of its proximity to the Montmorency Falls, it was named Le Sault. The opening of a power station at the waterfall at the end of the 20th century led to the establishment of several industrial companies along the river bank. The Club de Golf Royal Québec was founded on the plateau in 1874 . A settlement was built around this renowned golf club . In 1920 the municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Boischatel was founded (shortened to Boischatel in 1991). The place name is supposed to remember the officer Jean-Baptiste-François de Boschâtel, who died in 1760, on the other hand it corresponds to the romantic zeitgeist of the time. Boischatel has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association since 2002 .
