Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval is a city in the south of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the administrative region Capitale-Nationale , about 25 km north of the center of the provincial capital Québec . Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval belongs to the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) La Jacques-Cartier , has an area of 108.69 km² and has 5,696 inhabitants (2011).

Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval is located in the narrow valley of the Rivière Montmorency , a tributary of the Saint Lawrence River . The valley is bordered by numerous steep and wooded hills that belong to the Laurentine Mountains . The development extends for several kilometers along the right bank of the Montmorency; The river island Île de l'Enchanteresse is also built over.
Neighboring communities are Château-Richer in the north and east, L'Ange-Gardien in the south-east, Boischatel in the south, Québec in the south-west, Lac-Beauport in the north and Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury in the north-west.
history
The Séminaire de Québec had been the sole landowner in the Montmorency Valley since 1663, but the remote area remained largely undeveloped for a long time. This changed in 1830 when the seminary began to make plots available on the condition that they were used as quickly as possible. At first, almost exclusively Irish immigrants settled . Later French Canadians were added, who made up the majority of the population from the 1870s onwards. In 1863 the parish of Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval was founded. It is named on the one hand after the Irish saint Brigida von Kildare , on the other hand after François de Montmorency-Laval , the first bishop of Québec. Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval has been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association since 2002 . In 2012 the municipality received city status.

According to the 2011 census, Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval had 5,696 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 52.4 inh / km². 97.5% of the population stated French as their main language, while English accounted for 1.1%. 0.4% said they were bilingual (French and English), other languages and multiple answers made up 1.0%. Only French spoke 72.5%. In 2001, 89.8% of the population were Roman Catholic , 2.4% Protestant and 6.4% non-denominational.

Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval is located away from through traffic. The place can be reached via two main roads, from Lac-Beauport in the west (there connection to Autoroute 73 ) and from the Québec district of Beauport in the south.
