Zebras in the zoo

The Bolko Island ( Polish Wyspa Bolko ) is an island in the Oder in Opole . On the island there is the zoological garden of Opole , the Bolko lake (also Bolko pond) and a park.

Originally the island was surrounded by the Oder and its tributary the Winske . Since the flood canal was built in Opole, the island has also been surrounded by it.

history

The island was first mentioned in 1213 as "Kampe". From the 14th century it was called Bolko.

In 1910 the city of Opole bought a piece of land on the island. The Bolko People's Park was built on this.

Until the 1930s, Bolko Island was only accessible by boat. In the 1930s the Bolko zoo was established and a bridge to the island of Pascheke was built. On the island there were restaurants and beer gardens and festivals, concerts and dance events were held.
