Bollywood style dance

As Bollywood dance (also Bollywood dance , Bollywood dance or Bollywood dancing ) one describes fashion dances and party dances , which are based on the dance interludes of Indian films . It is named after Bollywood , the largest Indian film production in Mumbai .

In Indian films, the millennia-old Indian tradition of combining drama, song and dance is carried on in a modern way. That is why, since the introduction of the sound film, song and dance scenes have always been incorporated, which have a considerable share in the success of a film.

When you talk about Bollywood dance, you don't actually mean a uniform dance style, but rather a mixture of different dance styles. For a long time the classical Indian dances and the various folklore dances (especially Bhangra and Rajasthani folklore) were the dominant elements of the film dances. Based on the stylistic devices of classical Indian dance , western influences were increasingly incorporated into the choreographies. In the 1960s , for example, at least one of the dance scenes was twisted and “shaken” . The Indian version of the Western model was often quite idiosyncratic. Today different elements of contemporary fashion dances can be recognized. The western styles like hip-hop or disco dance are becoming more and more important. Depending on the subject of the film, the characteristics of the different styles are different.

In the 1960s, the so-called "items" appeared: dance interludes that are not related to the plot and primarily serve to increase the entertainment value of the film. One of the most famous item girls of the time was Helen .

To this day, music and dance performances are an important part of Bollywood films. A distinction is made between different themes, which are implemented differently depending on the interpretation of the choreographer and in which the different dance styles are differently pronounced.

  • Love song (rather less dance, more groaning)
  • Mujrah ( Kathak-like dance of the courtesans - older style)
  • Wedding song (describing the bride's beauty and jewelry)
  • Disco number (energetic dances based on western-oriented disco music)
  • Night club scene (usually an item that is a bit wicked)
  • Friendship song (often two or more men cheering on their close friendship)
  • Gypsy scene (for exuberant, somewhat suggestive songs)
  • Folkloric dance performances (for example fishing dance, harvest dance, etc. in rural surroundings, in Punjab for example the bhangra )
  • Dream scene (with often elaborate, fantastic decorations, mostly love songs)

Depending on the time or the environment in which a film takes place, the songs are selected and used accordingly. Of course, this assumes that the actors can also dance, but the vocals are recorded by well-known playback singers. While women used to be mainly active in dance scenes, the men's dance parts have now been expanded. The choreographers are guided by the respective dance skills.

The most famous choreographers at the moment are: Saroj Khan, Farah Khan, Ganesh Acharya.

In the choreographies , emphasis is placed primarily on the implementation of the lyrics with hand gestures and body language. The general mood, the musical style and the function of the song in the film as well as the character of the dancing figure must also be taken into account.

In India and Pakistan , where you grow up with these films and their dance scenes, children are already dancing in front of the television and in the school yard. Performances by children's dance groups are very popular at public events.

Classical Indian dancers classify Bollywood dance as vulgar rather than art. As a typical fashion dance and a popular phenomenon, film dances are seen today by more Indians than classical dance performances.

Due to the increasing broadcasting of Indian films in European countries and in the USA, Bollywood dance has also become increasingly popular in western cultures and is now an integral part of the offerings of numerous dance schools and adult education centers . There are also dance teachers, for example in Berlin , Hamburg , Bremen , Munich and Rosenheim , who specialize in Bollywood dance. Bollywood dance workshops are now being held in numerous German cities .
