Boniface de Challant († June 18, 1308 in Sion ) was bishop of Sion from 1289 to 1308 .

Life

Boniface comes from the wealthy noble family of the Lords of Challant in the Aosta Valley . He was the son of Vice Count Godefroy I and Beatrix of Geneva, his brother Aimo was Bishop of Vercelli . He was canon in Lyon in 1283 and papal chaplain in 1289 . After three years of vacancy , he became Bishop of Sion in 1290. He had the Tourbillon Castle built on a rock above the city . With the support of the communities, he defeated the rebellious nobility under the leadership of Peter IV von Turn in the Battle of Leuk in 1296 . Boniface concluded a trade treaty with Milan in 1291 and a peace treaty with Count Amadeus V of Savoy in 1301 . In 1304 he founded a hospital in Brig and in 1307 regulated trade across the Simplon . In the years 1300, 1303 and 1305 he issued synodal statutes.
