history

The 11th century castle was the Caput of the Rich Honor of Bonkyll and belonged to the well-known Bonkyl family , but fell by marriage to Sir John Stewart , son of Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland , in the late 13th century . Sir John's grandson, also a Sir John Stewart , married Margaret de Abernethy , heiress of Lordship Abernethy , in 1328 and was made Earl of Angus the following year , making him lord of extensive territories in the counties of Berwickshire , Angus and Kinross-shire . Sir John's granddaughter, Margaret Stewart , was the sole heir to the Earldom Angus, the Lordship Abernethy and the Honor Bonkyll. She had an illicit affair with William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas , which resulted in a child, George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus . From Countess Margaret's death in 1417 until the late 18th century, Bonkyll remained in the hands of the Douglas family, Earls of Angus, and then fell to the Earls of Home . The castle fell into disrepair in the 16th century.

A popular poem from Berwickshire refers to the medieval strength of Bonkyll Castle and the nearby fortresses of Billie Castle and Blanerne Castle due to their construction in the time of King David I and their destruction after Rough Wooing (1542-1551):

Bunkle, Billie and Blanerne
Three castles strong as airn
Built when Davie was a bairn
They'll all gang doon,
Wi 'Scotland's Croon
And ilka ane shall be a cairn

in German:
Bunkle (Bonkyll), Billie and Blanerne
Drei Burgen als stark wie All
built when David was a child
They will all fall
With the crown of Scotland
And all will be a pile of stones
