The Petrojarl Cidade del Rio das Ostras was a Floating Production Storage and Offloading Unit (FPSO unit) that entered service in 1981 as the Tanker St. Michaelis . It was used on the Tartaruga Verde oil field off the Brazilian coast and was chartered to Petróleo Brasileiro ( Petrobras ) until August 2018 .

history

The single-hull taker was built in 1980/1981 under construction number 1413 on the AG Weser in Bremen. The keel was laid on December 15, 1980, the launch on May 22, 1981. The completion of the ship took place on November 9, 1981. The ship first came into service as the St. Michaelis (as the second ship of this name) for Hamburg Süd , from mid-2004 Dukkar Engineering took over the ship on the British Virgin Islands and set it as Che Guevara initially under the Panamanian, then under the Russian flag.

The project to convert a tanker into an FSOP unit was commissioned by Teekay Petrojarl in 2006 on the basis of a feasibility study by the Norwegian company Brevik Engineering . The ship was planned as the world's first test unit that is not only for storage, but also for cleaning of particularly heavy crude oil to serve, that of offshore - production platforms or from boreholes is encouraged. Thermal processes are used here. The cleaned oil is delivered to tankers via a flexible pipeline. The purpose of the project was to reduce the cost of the pipelines to be laid in the sea and at the same time to carry out the first processing operations while at sea. Unlike similar ships, this ship processed crude oil from up to eight drilling sites simultaneously, not just from a single borehole, as Petrojarl also had to open up smaller wells, whose exploitation had not seemed profitable until then.

The conversion was carried out at the Polish shipyard Remontowa in Gdańsk ; the entire energy and a large part of the automation technology was developed and built by Wärtsilä ( Helsinki ). The Petrojarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras entered service on December 19, 2007. It was retired in 2020 because there was overcapacity in drilling ships and FPSO due to the drop in oil prices and the exhaustion of several fields.

functionality

The ship was anchored with 12 anchors in 765 meters water depth 100 kilometers northeast of Macaé off the Brazilian coast. With an API grade of 12.5 , the crude oil extracted from the neighboring wells is particularly heavy and viscous and has to be processed before it is transported to shore. The crude oil was delivered via up to eight pipelines from the surrounding boreholes directly or via an underwater buoy, so that the ship could turn depending on the current and weather and the lines and connections were spared. The crude oil was heated to 140 degrees on the ship and cleaned of water, paraffin , hydrogen sulfide and other fractions , with up to 12,000 bbls of water being separated out per day. Small amounts of gas were flared through a chimney, the purified crude oil was then stored and filled onto normal tankers via a hose system at the bow of the ship. The ship's storage capacity was 214,000 bbls ( barrels ) and the production capacity was 15,000 bbls per day.

The ship had powerful generators from Wärtsilä, safety and emergency shutdown systems from Emerson , two cranes and a helipad at the stern .
