Boat builder
Boat building is a state-recognized apprenticeship occupation that includes the new construction, repair, restoration as well as conversion and expansion of boats , yachts and smaller ships . The building materials used to build boats are mainly wood, plastics and metals; many boat builders specialize in one of these materials. Larger ships, on the other hand, are built by other professional groups at corresponding shipyards. The production of plastic hulls does not require a boat builder (except in mold making).
Germany
Initial and continuing education
The apprenticeship takes place in the dual system of vocational training and ends after 3.5 years with the journeyman's or final examination. The vocational schools are located in Duisburg, Bremen, Lübeck / Travemünde and Brake (Unterweser) and are each attended by the trainees from their federal state. Apprentice boat builders without a vocational school in their federal state attend the state vocational school of the HWK Lübeck in Travemünde.
The maritime competence center is to be understood as a component of the state vocational school. This is where the advanced training courses for boat builders find their place. Furthermore, various teaching contents are conveyed on site which are neglected in the teaching company or which cannot be addressed due to their specialization.
The boat builder is a recognized training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG) and the Crafts Code (HwO). After passing the journeyman's examination , preparation for the master craftsman examination can be started immediately , as the journeyman's year obligation was abolished in the course of the renewal of the skilled trades on January 1, 2004 (§ 49 HwO). In order to run your own business in this trade, despite the amendment by the EU in some trades, a passed master's examination is required. Boat building is a craft of “high demand”.
The training regulations were modernized in 2010. The aim was to replace the mono profession with a profession with two disciplines . The previous content can be found in a subject area of “new construction, expansion and conversion”, while the new subject area “technology” is intended to take account of the increasing assembly, maintenance and repair of technical equipment elements, including on-board electrical systems. The new training regulations came into force on August 1, 2011.
Employment alternatives
Training as a boat builder is a good basis for working in the areas of boat rental or advice and sales of boats and accessories. If you have the necessary experience in woodworking, you can also switch to the carpentry trade.
Switzerland

Boat builders and boat technicians are closely related professions and are described in a joint regulation. In terms of content, the first two years of apprenticeship and thus the basics are common.
Boat builders then delve into new construction, expansion and conversion work on watercraft as well as repairs. This also includes creating and interpreting the necessary technical documents.
Boat attendants, on the other hand, deal with the transport, storage and repair of watercraft from the third year of training. This also includes taking the motorboat and sailing test.
