Borellis dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma borellii , syn .: Apistogramma reitzigi ), also called yellow dwarf cichlid , is a freshwater fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae).

distribution

The yellow dwarf cichlid is widespread in South America , mainly in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso and in the catchment area of the Río Paraguay . It lives in mostly clear and stagnant or slowly flowing waters with many aquatic plants, often between the roots of floating plants and in caves.

features

This cichlid can reach a size of about 8 cm and an age of 4 years, the male is slightly larger and more colorful than the female. In addition, males can be recognized by their longer anal and dorsal fins. In special cases, males can also take on the inconspicuous coloration of a female in order to be able to stay in the territory of another, dominant male.

Fin formula : dorsal fin XVI / 5–6, anal fin III / 6–7.

Color form

A color form native to the Río Paraguay is the Apistogramma borellii opal , in which the male has a bluish tint.

Behavior and reproduction

Borellis dwarf cichlid is territorial. Males are polygamous and live with several females who form sub-territories in the male's territory. In optimal conditions, these cave-brooding fish can lay 40 to 70 eggs. During the courtship and breeding season, the females get an intense yellow color, a typical pattern and guard the spawn and the larvae.
