Boris Sakharov (born December 12, 1899 in Zhemerinka a ; † October 6, 1959 ) was a pioneer of yoga in Europe.

Life

Boris Sakharov was born in the Russian Empire in what is now the Ukraine as the son of a doctor and shipping company owner. His father was honored by Emperor Nicholas II for his scientific merits . Sakharov graduated from high school in Russia.

After the October Revolution of 1917 , his parents were expropriated and murdered. Boris Sakharov fled his homeland in 1919, before the Polish-Soviet War in 1920, and settled in Berlin in 1926 . In order to protect himself from political stalking, he took on the name Boris Arov, which he only gave up again in 1926, after the Locarno Treaty .

During this time, Sakharov studied mathematics and physics at the Technical University in Berlin and earned his living as an interpreter, translator and graphic artist. In 1926 he opened his yoga school on Humboldt-Straße in Berlin, which he presented as "Indian physical fitness". This school was the first of its kind in Germany and probably also in Europe.

While working as an interpreter in the Netherlands , he met the Indian philosopher Krishnamurti and later also Swami Sivananda Saraswati, whose pupil he became. From him he received the diploma of the “Divine Life Society” and the title “Yogiraj” in 1947. Both encounters had a major impact on Sakharov's future work. From now on, Sakharov's endeavor should be to give hatha yoga a scientific basis. He has authored several books on the subject.

In the period from 1933 to 1945 his "School for Indian Physical Education" continued.

After the end of the war, Sakharov fled again from the Soviet Army. He came to Bayreuth via Karlsbad in a roundabout way , where he again founded a yoga school. On October 6, 1959, he had a fatal accident on the A 9 . He is buried in the city cemetery in Bayreuth.

First German yoga school

Sakharov's “First German Yoga School (EDY)”, founded in 1921, existed until 1945, when it was completely destroyed by the war in Berlin. After fleeing to Bayreuth, Boris Sakharov re-founded his "School for Indian Physical Education" there and held the first VHS yoga classes and yoga lectures there. In 1946 he renamed his school to "First German Yoga School".

After Sakharov had a fatal accident on October 6, 1959, Sigmund Feuerabendt ( Mahatmayogi ) succeeded him. To this day he heads the “First German Yoga School”. The EDY was based in Bayreuth until 1971, in Ingolstadt from 1971 to 2006 and since then in Speichersdorf . “Sakharov Fire Evening Yoga” is taught today at 48 locations in Germany.

Individual evidence

  1. There is evidence that Sakharov only came to Germany in 1926 (Tietke 2011, 83). In this case, the statement by his successor Sigmund Feuerabendt that Sacharow founded his school in 1921 is unlikely. Also, the 'school' was a very small establishment, as it was situated at Sacharow's home.
