Heinrich Borwin I , Prince of Mecklenburg († January 28, 1227 ) from the Niklotids dynasty was Lord of Mecklenburg from 1178 until his death in 1227 .

In addition to the Latinized form of the name Borwin , Burwinus , Borwinus or Boriwinus , he is also called Buruwe by his sons in 1219 . He is also mentioned as Henricus Buruwi , Heinricus Buriwoi , Hinricus Burwy (Burwi) .

Heinrich Borwin I was the son of the Abodrite Prince and Lord of Mecklenburg Pribislaw from his first marriage to an unknown Slavic nobleman. After the death of his father on December 30, 1178 at a tournament at the court of Henry the Lion in Lüneburg , he succeeded him. He was married to Mathilde, a daughter of Heinrich the Lion from his extramarital association with Ida, a daughter of Count Gottfried von Blieskastel . From this marriage, Nicholas II († 1225) and Heinrich Borwin II.(† 1226) had two sons. In his second marriage, Heinrich Borwin I was married to an otherwise unknown Adelheid. With this he had a daughter Elisabeth († 1265), from 1241 abbess in Wienhausen .

For years Heinrich Borwin was at war with his cousin Nikolaus I (Niklot) , son of Wertislaw , in which his father-in-law could no longer support him. This family war in Mecklenburg and the lack of outside help provided the Danish King Knut VI. the opportunity to expand its position on the Baltic Sea .

The Danes managed to arrest Heinrich Borwin, whereupon he - like Nicholas I - submitted as a vassal and ceded Rostock to the Danes . He received this back as a fief in 1200 . In 1201 he took part in the Battle of Stellau . In gratitude for this he received Gadebusch and Ratzeburg as fiefs in 1203 . In 1218/19 he supported Denmark in the conquest of Estonia and in 1225–1227 against the Schauenburgs .

The new founding of the cities of Rostock and Wismar goes back to Heinrich Borwin , as well as the foundation of the monasteries in Dobbertin , Tempzin and Neukloster .
