prehistory

During the reign of King Canute VI. (1170 to 1202) there were repeated clashes between the rulers of Denmark and the Counts of Schauenburg and Holstein . So there was Count Adolf III after his return. from the crusade of Henry VI. in 1197 and 1198 disputes over Rügen and in 1200 over Reinoldsburg and Dithmarschen .

The battle

In 1201 the decisive battle took place near Stellau (today a district of Wrist in the Amt Kellinghusen ), in which Count Adolf III. was subject. After the battle he withdrew to Hamburg via Stade . There he was besieged by Waldemar II and finally taken prisoner.

consequences

In 1203, Adolf III renounced the County of Holstein as a price for his release and retired to his home county of Schauenburg.

The victor of the Battle of Stellau, Waldemar II, was nicknamed “the winner” because of this battle and was King of Denmark from 1202 to 1227 after the death of his brother Canute.

Only Count Adolf IV von Schauenburg was able to break the Danish urge to expand and recapture the County of Holstein with the victory in the Battle of Bornhöved in 1227.

A Romanesque stone church ( Stellau Church ), built by the "Krummendieks" near the battlefield of Stellau, was consecrated in 1230 by Archbishop Gebhard II of Bremen .
