The Botanical Garden of the City of Neuss is a botanical garden in the Dreikönigenviertel of Neuss . It is located between Körnerstraße and Bergheimer Straße and covers an area of ​​around 1 hectare. The garden was opened in 1914 as a botanical school garden . It is open during the day.

The botanical garden is sponsored by the association "Friends and Patrons of the Botanical Garden Neuss".

history

In 1906, the botanical school garden was set up for educational purposes on the grounds of the city gardening department according to plans by the gardening director Franz Kellermann.

During the First World War, the garden was neglected and was used for the cultivation and cultivation of vegetables and potatoes.

The garden was neglected during the Second World War ; it was destroyed by bombings and used for growing food. From 1948 it was rebuilt.

In 1961 the botanical garden and the plant showroom were officially opened.

In 1999 the bird show house was built.

In 2004, among other things, a herb spiral , medicinal plant and kitchen herb beds and beds for schoolchildren were created in cooperation with the Naturschutzjugend NRW .

By council resolution of September 15, 2000 it was confirmed that the garden should be preserved and that no partial areas should be built over. Another council resolution from 2001 provides for further design ideas in the event that areas become vacant. In 2013, Lord Mayor Herbert Napp again proposed a residential development for the areas that had become vacant when the city nursery was closed. After intensive efforts by the association, supported by many citizens, the council decided in 2014 to expand the botanical garden to include the area of ​​the old city nursery.

In 2014 the garden was also hit by the Whitsun storm.

In mid-2019, the first work took place on the grounds of the nursery.

In the plant show house there is a tropical section with ginger , bananas , orchids and bromeliads and other species.

The bird species in the aviary and bird show house include cockatiels , budgerigars , lovebirds , dwarf quails , rose bullfinches , zebra finches , goat parakeets , rosella parakeets .
