Botany Downs is a district of the former independent city of Manukau City on the North Island of New Zealand . From November 1, 2010, Manukau City became part of the Auckland Council along with other cities and districts in the Auckland region.
geography
The district is located around 15 km southeast of downtown Auckland in the eastern half of the peninsula, which extends east of the Tamaki River into the Hauraki Gulf . The surrounding boroughs are Highland Park to the west, Howick to the north, North Park to the south and Somerville to the east .
history
The district of Botany Downs was developed in the 1990s by Manukau City Council and a private investor with a town center on an area of 17.6 hectares and 56,500 m² of retail space and built between 1998 and 2004. In the district, a mix of low to medium building density and fenced settlements was created, whereby the urban planning paid attention to a balance between private and public streets and squares and sociability . The two settlements Eastpark and Sacramento were also outstanding in the development project . The latter included the concept of developing a settlement in the Spanish architectural style and Eastpark in the New Zealand contemporary style. In both settlements, two-story houses were built in contrast to the rest of the development in the district.
population
In the 2013 census, the district, which is marked as Howick South in the census statistics, had 4962 inhabitants, 1.6% more than in the 2006 census. With a share of 25.9% of residents of Asian origin, the district is located together with the neighboring districts of Northpark and Somerville , which are over 42% and 43% respectively of the population of Asian descent, extremely high compared to other districts of Auckland .
