The frosted grape basidia ( Botryobasidium pruinatum ) is a mushroom species from the family of grape basidia relatives (Botryobasidiaceae). It forms resupinate, cobweb-like fruiting bodies that grow on the trunks of dead deciduous trees, more rarely on conifers . The species is distributed in the Palearctic . The fructification takes place in spring and autumn. No anamorph of the species is known.

features

Macroscopic features

The frosted grape basidia has spider-like fruit bodies that grow resupinate (i.e. completely adjacent) on its substrate and appear slightly net-like under the magnifying glass. They are gray or yellowish-ocher in color.

Microscopic features

As with all grape basidia , the hyphae structure of the frosted grape basidia is monomitic , i.e. it consists only of generative hyphae that branch out at right angles. The basal hyphae are yellow or brown, rough, very broad (15–20  µm ) and long-celled. The 5–8 µm wide subhymenial hyphae are thin-walled, richly branched and encrusted. The species does not have cystids or buckles . The mostly 6-spore, 15-25 × 7-10 µm large basidia of the species grow in nests and are sub-cylindrical. At their base they are simply septate. The spores are ellipsoidal to ovate, 5–8 × 2.5–3.5 µm in size, smooth and slightly thick-walled.

distribution

The frosted grape base is widespread in western Palearctic . The distribution ranges from North Africa through Europe to Iran.

ecology

The frosted grape basid is a saprobiont that colonizes dead wood from deciduous trees and, less often, conifers . The fruiting bodies can be found on branches and trunks lying close to the ground. Common substrates are red beech ( Fagus sylvatica ), maples ( Acer spp.) And oaks ( Quercus spp.).
