from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the Federal Republic of Germany (until 1958 the Royal Iraqi Embassy ) had its seat in Bonn from 1953 to 2002 . The building that last served as the embassy chancellery , previously only used as the ambassador's residence, is located in the Friesdorf district on Annaberger Straße (house number 289). In 2015, a branch office of the embassy was set up there again.

history

After the end of the state of war between the two countries on April 12, 1951, the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany on September 19, 1953, Iraq opened an embassy at the Bonn government seat. It was temporarily based in the Rheinhotel Dreesen in Bad Godesberg (as of March 1954), then (as of September 1954) in Bonn's Südstadt (Am Hofgarten 1–2). In 1957 the legation was converted into an embassy. The short-term Arab Federation between Iraq and Jordan in 1958 had no effect on the embassy. By 1958 the office of the embassy moved to Argelanderstraße 4, the cultural attaché (as of 1960) was based at Argelanderstraße 1. Until 1962, it was relocated to Koblenzer Straße 110 (today Adenauerallee ), the cultural attaché remained located at Argelanderstraße 1. By 1965, the embassy office was relocated to Viktoriastraße 27 (with consular department) in Bad Godesberg, the then spatial focus of the diplomatic missions; At that time, the military department was at Rubensstraße 4 in the Bad Godesberg district of Hochkreuz and the cultural department in Beuel (Gottfried-Claren-Straße 2). On May 12, 1965, Iraq broke off diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic as a result of the recognition of Israel by the Federal Republic of Germany. Subsequently, the embassy of Switzerland, acting as a protective power for Iraq, took care of business for the country from the previous location of the Iraqi embassy with a "Department for Iraqi Interests" (protective power representation). The protective power agency moved to Coburger Strasse 19 in the Bonn district of Gronau by 1968 . Switzerland was last (as of 1973) replaced as a protecting power by the Republic of Afghanistan ; the location of the agency remained unchanged.

Dürenstrasse 33, seat of the embassy office from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s (2012)

On February 28, 1974, diplomatic relations between Iraq and the Federal Republic were resumed. The newly opened Iraqi embassy was located in the Godesberg villa district (Hohenzollernstrasse 12), the military attaché was based in the same district at Jahnstrasse 10 (today Jahnallee). From 1963 to 1974/75 at the latest, Bornheim Castle in the city of the same name north-west of Bonn served as the residence of the embassy, residence of the ambassador Bad Godesberg district Friesdorf (Annaberger Straße 289). In August 1980 Iraq exchanged some of its embassy staff in Bonn. The embassy office moved back to Bonn's Südstadt (Lennéstrasse 1) by 1981 and was relocated again to the Godesberg villa district ( Dürenstrasse 33 ) in 1985/86 . At least until the end of the 1980s it was a control center for Iraq’s arms deals with German arms manufacturers , including Degussa , Ferrostaal and MAN . In the Second Gulf War in January 1991, 28 Iraqi diplomats were expelled from Germany. As a result of the UN embargo issued at the beginning of the Second Gulf War and the associated financial bottlenecks for Iraq, the rental costs for the Dürenstrasse 33 property no longer appeared to be disputable, so that after 1994 the embassy office moved to the previous residence of the ambassador in the Friesdorf district (Annaberger Strasse 289 ) was relocated.

As a result of the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin (1999), the Iraqi embassy moved there in July 2002 with the last eight relatives. The previous office and residence building of the embassy in the Friesdorf district was now empty. In October 2010, the Iraqi embassy offered the property for rent on behalf of its government. In 2015, a branch office of the Iraqi embassy with the consular district of North Rhine-Westphalia was set up in the building (as of March 2018).
