Die Bounty is a 1978 replica of the 18th century Bounty made famous by its mutiny for the film Die Bounty . The ship is sometimes referred to as Bounty III to distinguish it from the original and the 1960 replica ; however, the digits are not part of the ship's name .

The Bounty was seaworthy until the end and was based in Hong Kong , where it was available for events and charter trips.

history

The ship was built in 1978 for the 1983 film The Bounty starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins ; the shipyard was Oceania Marine in Whangarei in New Zealand . The ship was later used in various television productions, including the miniseries Wind and Stars (1986), where it portrayed the Endeavor , Moby Dick (1998) and The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant (2005).

The ship was based in Darling Harbor (Sydney). In 2007 it was sold to Hong Kong Resort International Ltd and marketed there as a tourist attraction. After ten years, it was shut down in 2017. The owner did not provide any information about the reasons for this.

technology

The Bounty is a three-masted full ship with up to 19 sails with a total area of about 900 m²; the main mast was 33 m high. The overall length is 42 m - unlike the 55 m long replica from 1960, the ship has not been significantly enlarged compared to the original. The hull is made of welded steel and was clad with wooden planks. The approximately 30 m long upper deck is made of wood.
