The Brøndby Stadium is a football stadium in Brøndby , a suburb of the Danish capital Copenhagen . It is owned and hosted by Brøndby IF ( Superliga ) football club .
history
The Brøndby Stadium was opened in 1965 and today offers around 28,000 seats, of which 23,400 seats and 15 are wheelchair-accessible. This makes it the second largest stadium in the country after parking . At the time of the inauguration, however, it was little more than an athletics facility with a playing field lined with an embankment and poplar trees. In 1978 the first covered audience area of the facility with 1,200 seats was built. Two years later a floodlight system followed, and again two years later another audience area with 5,000 seats was built opposite the main stand. The athletics club Brøndby Atletik also used the stadium until the athletics facility was removed in 1991. In 1992 a grandstand was built behind both gates, each with 5,500 standing places. The venue thus achieved a capacity of around 20,000 seats.
In May 1998 the club bought the stadium from the city for DKK 23.5 million . In the years from 1999 to 2000 the stadium was extensively renovated and expanded. The attendance record was set on June 18, 2003 at the game Brøndby IF against FC Copenhagen with 31,508 spectators. Monster truck races were held in the stadium in June 2008 .
As the club announced in October 2016, the stadium will keep its name in the future. They want to keep it as a tradition and not sell it to a sponsor . The possibility of adding a sponsor to the name was left open.
