description

The plants are yellowish to whitish-green in color and form shiny, interwoven lawns. The trunks are mostly creeping, lying close to the ground. They are relatively densely covered with rhizoid clusters and branched irregularly into simple branches that are often conspicuously upright. The densely arranged stem and branch leaves are loosely attached, shaped like a lanceolate and gradually taper off into a fine, non-twisted tip. They often have deep longitudinal folds beginning at the leaf base. The leaves are about 2.4 to 3 mm long. The leaf margin is often fine in the Astblättern especially in the upper half cut . The lamina cells are 70 to 100 µm long and 6 to 10 µm wide. The few, indistinctly developed leaf wing cells are thick-walled. The seta is colored red, smooth and up to 2 cm long. The cylindrically shaped capsule is slightly to strongly curved and has a red-brown peristome . Spore ripening occurs all year round, but generally occurs more frequently in the winter months.
