Brewery in the Wunderburg 10
Brewery beer

The Mahr Brewery is a brewery in Bamberg in Upper Franconia . It has been owned by the Michel family since 1895. Around 23,000 hectoliters of beer are produced in the brewery each year .

history

The history of the Mahrs brewery goes back to the 16th century. As early as 1541 Hans Ziegler acquired a piece of land from Michael Schneider, which later became known as the Ziegelhütte . The Zweidlerplan , the earliest printed city view of Bamberg by Petrus Zweidler, shows a brewery and inn there in 1602 . The brewery was considerably destroyed during the Thirty Years War and burned down completely in 1650. The brewery was first mentioned in a document in 1670, and in 1683 the brewery was rebuilt under the name Ziegelhütte at its current location in the Wunderburg .

Between 1716 and 1798 the brewery was owned by the Steinfeld family. By marrying Regina Steinfeld, Kaspar Eberlein took over the management of the brewery. He created a new building in 1826, which housed the inn and the brewery called Zum Brenner from then on . After Kaspar Eberlein's death, the brewery was run by his daughter's husband until it was finally advertised for sale in 1837. The current name of the brewery goes back to the buyer Karl Mahr, who bought the property in 1840. The Michel era began with the acquisition of the brewery in the Wunderburg including the rock cellar on Stephansberg in 1895 by Johann Michel junior.

In 1908 the brewery building in the Wunderburg was torn down and replaced by the brick building, which is now a listed building. The chimney for the brewhouse now measured 32 meters. The high investments soon took their toll. In 1913 the company went bankrupt and was foreclosed . It was bought back by Elise Michel, Johann Michel's third wife. The brewery thus remained in family ownership. After a break due to the war, the company resumed production in 1949 when the brewing license was regained. Finally, the company Mahrs Bräu Bamberg, Gebr. Michel OHG was founded in 1957 under the management of Albert and Wilhelm Michel, sons of Elise Michels. In 1971, Ingmar Michel, the third generation, took over the management of the brewery. Stephan Michel has been the sole managing director of Mahrs Bräu since 2016 .

Products

The special thing about the in-house "Unspounded" is the unpressurized storage, which means that the carbonic acid can only bind to the beer through the static internal pressure in the tank. One consequence of this is the low carbon dioxide content of only 4 grams / liter. Traditionally, the "U" is drawn from oak barrels. Since 2017, Mahrs Bräu has been using the bottle design from the 1960s again. Under the motto "topless" and "back to the roots" more attention is paid to classic, simple design.
