The Mittenwald Brewery is a private brewery in the Upper Bavarian Mittenwald with an annual output of 17,000 hectoliters of beer and 5,000 hl of non-alcoholic beverages.

history

First brewery, around 1890

On August 2, 1808, the tradesman Johann Jochner and the Royal Bavarian Postman and Landlord Thomas Knilling received the concession to produce beer. The first brewery, called "Brauerei zur Post", was completed around 1820. It was located at what is now the rear building of the “Hotel Post”. In 1835 a beer cellar was built on the slopes of the Kofel ( Lage ) and in 1840 one at the foot of the Burgberg ( Lage ).

On January 9, 1864, the then owner Rosa Reindl died and the brewery was inherited by her nephew Johann Baptist Neuner, in whose family she has been since then.

New brewery, 1902

On September 30, 1891, a large part of the brewery was destroyed by fire. Production was then temporarily relocated to the Burgberg cellar. In the following year, the construction of a new storage cellar ("Post-Keller") began, at that time still outside the village. In 1898 the new brewery including the ice cellar was built directly behind the "Post-Keller". Before the inauguration of the new building on April 8, 1903, Johann Baptist Neuner died and his son Johann Neuner took over the business.

Starting in 1830, the brewing water came from the brewery's own spring ("Stell") on the Lautersee via a wooden pipeline ; the pipeline was supplemented in 1898 by a cast iron pipeline. The water also drove a turbine to generate electricity until the switch to three-phase alternating current from outside followed between 1946 and 1950 . Until 1921, heat was only produced by wood fires, from then on additionally with pitch coal . The switch to light oil took place in 1965, followed by natural gas in 1992 . The ice harvested from Lautersee was sufficient for cooling until 1935 , when a Linde ammonia compressor with a diesel engine was purchased, which was replaced by two electric compressors in 1964.

It had its own malt house until 1963 . The filling line installed in 1964 was replaced by a new, fully automatic one in 2005.

In 2013, the reconstruction of the post cellar and the new construction of the brewhouse began . The Postkeller was reopened at the end of 2014 and the new brewhouse was inaugurated on January 26, 2016. Previously, in April 2015, the then managing director Mathias Neuner died. His wife Marion took over the management of the brewery, their children Katharina and Christoph became co-partners.
