The Brauneck in Upper Bavaria is part of the Bavarian Pre-Alps ( Bavarian Alpine Foreland ) and is an offshoot of the Benediktenwand . The summit height is 1555  m , the valley height at Lenggries is 740  m (815 vertical meters). The Brauneck area is fully developed through farm roads and the Brauneck mountain railway as well as several ski lifts and is a popular skiing and hiking area due to its proximity to the state capital Munich (60 km) and the connection to the Bavarian Oberlandbahn . The mountain is also a starting point for hang-gliders and paragliders, which they can easily reach by cable car. The separate landing areas are to the north (hang gliders) and south (paragliders) of the parking lot of the Brauneck cable car. In 2012 the 100,000 m³ water storage lake Garland was created for artificial snow-making on the ski slopes .

The following managed huts, some with overnight accommodation, can be found on the Brauneck: Reiseralm (private), Brauneck-Gipfelhaus (section of the Alpine Ski Club of the German Alpine Club ), Tölzer Hut, Quenger-Alm, Stie-Alm, Bayernhütte, Florianshütte , Kotalm, Milchhäusl and Finstermünz-Alm; the last two are only open in winter.
