Bravães is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the northern Portuguese district of Ponte da Barca . 629 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).
history
In 1180 there was already a monastery in Bravães, which Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , subordinated to the knight Pelagio Velasques . The place of the same name existed in the vicinity of the monastery. In the following times, the monastery increasingly lost its importance and fell into disrepair until it lost its status in 1420 on the instructions of Pope Martin V , and since 1434 it was only a simple parish church.
Attractions
The small church Igreja de São Salvador ("Church of the Redeemer") from around 1125, according to other sources as early as 1080 , is one of the most important Romanesque castle churches in Portugal. The west portal shows over-long human figures and animal figures from the realm of fables and its sculptural decorations are reminiscent of the south portal of Santiago de Compostela . The iconography of the portals is unusual for Portugal and has not yet been clearly determined. The church, like two smaller churches ( capelas ) in the municipality, is a listed building.
