action

13-year-old Bruce, called Pikelet because of his surname, and the sociable 14-year-old Ivan, called Loonie because of his surname, are unequal friends, but they are united by their desire for adventure and a life away from everyday routines. So they explore a river together. Loonie is a wild child, but is beaten by his father. Pikelet, on the other hand, who comes from a secure family and is a hardworking student, really likes fishing trips with his much more tolerant father. Pikelet and Loonie, who live in the 1970s, ride their bikes through Sawyer, a small town on Australia's west coast, and one day watch surfers. They find this hobby completely pointless, but it also seems so elegant to them that they also start surfing on cheap Styrofoam boards. They later save money in order to be able to afford a used fiberglass board.

When the surfer Sando realizes that the boys always come to the beach with their bicycles, he offers them to take their boards there in his truck, which is very convenient for them. At first they think Sando is just another hippie surfer, and his not particularly friendly friend Eva does little to change this judgment, but soon he takes the boys under his wing and not only teaches them surfing techniques, but encourages them to to conquer ever higher waves and overcome their fears.

Sando also becomes a kind of mentor for the boys, discussing philosophical questions with them, although Pikelet is better at expressing himself than the emotionally inhibited Loonie. They also learn that Sando was once a famous professional surfer and Eva, who is from the USA, was a hot dog skiing champion until she sustained a serious knee injury, which explains her often bad mood. Pikelet finds a girlfriend in Queenie when school starts again, but surfing is his real passion. However, he is not quite as daring as Loonie, which is why Sando treats him preferentially.
