The broad-leaved hornwort is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 3 to 10 centimeters, is bluish-green in color and has a grassy habit. The stem is hairy, stipules are missing. The opposite, sessile leaves are soft, covered with 0.5 millimeter long glandular hairs, 10 to 35 millimeters long, broadly ovate to lanceolate, pointed and thick.

The broad-leaved hornwort blooms from July to August. The inflorescences are also hairy. The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are free. The five white petals are 12 to 18 millimeters long, slightly edged and deeply split. There are ten stamens and five styles . The capsule fruit is up to 15 millimeters long and has ten fruit teeth.

The species chromosome number is 2n = 36.

The broad-leaved hornwort is a rare plant species, its main area of ​​distribution is the Alps ( Austria , France , Germany , Switzerland , Italy ), in addition there are some isolated occurrences in the area of ​​the former Czechoslovakia , in Poland and Romania .

The species grows in rock rubble fields of the alpine level, especially above the tree line on fresh, lime-rich rock rubble soil. She is a Thlaspeion rotundifolii federation character. She is a rubble crawler.

It thrives in the Allgäu Alps from Thäli am Joch above the Prinz-Luitpoldhaus in Bavaria at 2000 m to the summit of the Großer Krottenkopf , the highest mountain in the Allgäu at 2655 m above sea level.
