The source of the Breitenbach is 640  m above sea level. NHN west of Großbreitenbach. It flows into the Schwarza in Schwarzmühle in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district .

Border river

In the past, the Breitenbach formed the border between the principalities of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen for almost its entire length . Today it separates the districts of the communities Böhlen and Großbreitenbach in a large section.
