Breitenbich (originally Breitenbach ) is a hamlet in the district of Zella , which in turn forms part of the municipality of Anrode in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia . The place arose on the area of a monastery that existed here for a few years in the 13th century and was the nucleus of the Anrode Monastery .

location

One kilometer east of Zella in a small side valley of the Unstrut on the edge of the southern roof of the Dün is the property of the former monastery and later the Breitenbich estate at an altitude of 330 m. The Mühlhausen Landgraben with the former Horsmar observation point runs south-east as the historical border between the Eichsfeld and the Free Imperial City of Mühlhausen . A small stream rises in the village, which flows into the Unstrut in Zella, to the south is the Erbsberg (335 m). From the neighboring towns of Horsmar and Beberstedt , the state road L 2042 leads to Breitenbich and a connecting web from Zella, to the west the Gotha – Leinefelde railway line passes.

history

Breitenbich Monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1249. In 1253 the place was given up again, the convent first moved to Mühlhausen , later to Anrode . In 1253 the property went to the Order of Knights of St. Lazarus , who founded a branch there. They owned the site until the end of the 15th century, after which they belonged to the Kommende Gotha, who belonged to the Order of St. In the 16th century an agricultural property was built up with the land, the owners changed more frequently in the following centuries. In the more recent past it was used as a company rest home and inn.

From 1908 to 1997 the surrounding towns were connected to the railway network with a stop named after Breitenbich on the Gotha-Leinefelde railway line.
