The Breitenbruch Forest is a fragmented natural subunit with the order number 334.32 of the Upper Arnsberg Forest ("Buchwald") (334.3) within the North Sauerland Oberland (334). According to the handbook of the natural spatial structure of Germany, it comprises the Upper Arnsberg Forest between Arnsberg in the Oeventrop Ruhrtal (333.1) and the Plackweghöhe (334.5) in the south and the Möhneseeg area (334.21) and the Heve-Möhne forest (334.31) in the north. To the east, the Breitenbruch Forest borders the Hirschberger Blöse (334.33). The name is derived from the old Arnsberg forest workers settlement Breitenbruch , which is located in the middle of the forest and, next to individual forest houses, is the only settlement in the natural area.

The wavy structured forest area consists of elongated ridges stretching in an east-west direction with valley hollows and slabs in between . Greywacke and clay slate dominate the rock in the subsoil . The soils consisting of their decomposition products are sandy-loamy and covered with a thin layer of loess loam . In the depressions in the terrain, they tend to waterlogging and bog formation , which is also reflected in place names with the toponym break (Breitenbruch, Brandiger Bruch , Schwarzenbruch ). Species-poor beech forests thrive on the soils .

In contrast to the Lower Arnsberg Forest (334.2) to the north, the climate is much more humid and cooler. The May / July mean temperature is 13 to 14 ° C with 900 mm annual precipitation . As the largest flowing water, the creeks Große- and Kleine Schmalenau cross the Breitenbruch forest in a northerly direction.
