The Kleine Schmalenau is a 10.6 km long tributary of the Hevesees, which belongs to the Möhnetalsperre, and thus a left tributary of the Heve in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

geography

The Kleine Schmalenau rises in the Arnsberg Forest on the Sattel between Damberg and Haskers Brücher . The source is located around 750 meters north of Dinschede in the immediate vicinity of the Plackweg at an altitude of 389  m above sea level. NHN . From here the stream initially flows in a northerly direction. After about half of the way, the course turns to the northwest. After a 10.6 km stretch of river, the Kleine Schmalenau flows into the Hevesee, a dam of the Möhne reservoir. The height of the estuary is now 213  m .

With a height difference of 176 m, the mean bed slope is 16.6 ‰. The 17.909 km² catchment area is drained to the North Sea via the Heve, Möhne , Ruhr and Rhine .

Tributaries

nature and environment

The Small Schmalenau located throughout its course in the nature reserve Breitenbruch-Neuhaus or in the nature reserve headwaters of the Little Schmalenau . Efforts are currently underway to designate an Arnsberg Forest National Park for this area . It is already part of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park . The kingfisher breeds by the stream and the black stork , which breeds in the adjacent forests, is a frequent food guest. A botanical peculiarity is an extensive occurrence of the ostrich fern ( Matteuccia struthiopteris ) in the lower reaches of the Kleine Schmalenau. The Kleine Schmalenau is part of a current life project of the European Union stream valleys in the Arnsberg Forest . In this project, spruce stands by the stream are transformed into near-natural forests, and previous stream straightening and bank barriers are removed.
