The internal end of Clematis or almond clematis ( Clematis flammula ) is a plant from the genus clematis ( Clematis ) within the family of Ranunculaceae (Ranunculaceae). It forms decorative and fragrant flowers that smell intensely of bitter almond.

Vegetative characteristics

The burning clematis forms climbing, deciduous, perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights of 3 to 5 meters.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The mostly double-pinnate leaf blade usually has five leaflets. The lower leaflets are broadly oval and often triple or multi-lobed, rounded at the base and otherwise serrated, the upper leaflets are usually simple. The feathers are long-stalked and shiny on top.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to August. In the upper leaf axils are numerous flowers in large, up to 25 centimeters wide, paniculate inflorescences . The fragrant flowers are radial symmetry with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters . The four white bracts are narrow and hairy on the outside at the edge.

The fruits have a feathery tail that is up to 2 centimeters long.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The burning clematis thrives in maquis and hedges in the Mediterranean and the Middle East . It is common in the Mediterranean. The burning clematis is not hardy in Central Europe .

The burning clematis was a popular and common garden plant in Central Europe from the 17th to the 19th centuries. However, it can hardly be seen in our gardens today.
