Brian James McDermott (born April 8, 1961 in Slough ) is a retired English football player and current coach.

Player career

Brian McDermott made his debut on March 10, 1979 at the age of seventeen for Arsenal FC in the Football League First Division 1978/79 . Two months later, the club won the FA Cup 1978/79 with a 3-2 win over Manchester United, without the youngsters not being used . He was regularly used for the first time in the 1980/81 season (23 games / 5 goals) and reached third place in the table with Arsenal. In the following three seasons, his playing times were reduced again before he moved to the second division Oxford United in December 1984 . Previously, he had acted on loan from April to October 1984 for the Swedish first division club IFK Norrköping and reached the play-off final of Fotbollsallsvenskan in 1984 against IFK Göteborg (1: 5 and 0: 2) with the promoted team.

With Oxford he rose at the end of the season 1984/85 as a second division champion in the first division and managed the relegation in the Football League First Division 1985/86 the following year . An even greater success came with winning the league cup 1985/86 with a 3-0 in the final against Queens Park Rangers . Brian McDermott was not in the squad for the final game.

After further positions at the lower class clubs Cardiff City , Exeter City , Yeovil Town , and South China AA from Hong Kong, he ended his playing career in 1995 after six games for his hometown club Slough Town.

Coaching career

After two coaching positions at the lower-class clubs Slough Town and Woking FC , Brian McDermott became a member of the coaching team at Reading FC in September 2000 . After the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers on December 16, 2009, he initially took over the post as interim coach before he was introduced on January 27, 2010 as the new head coach. McDermott had taken the club on the fourth from bottom place in the 2009/10 Football League Championship and could not bring his team out of the risk of relegation in the first two months. Thanks to a significant increase in performance in the last third of the season, Reading finished the season as ninth in the table and Brian McDermott received the title of coach of the month in the second division in March 2010.

In the Football League Championship 2010/11 , his team reached the play-offs with a fifth place in the table and moved into the final after a success over Cardiff City (0-0 and 3-0). There, however, the team failed 4-2 on Swansea City , which was coached by McDermott's predecessor Brendan Rodgers , and thus missed promotion to the Premier League . Brian McDermott was named Trainer of the Month this time in April 2011.

Brian McDermott, who was honored as coach of the month in February and March 2012, led his team to a direct promotion position in the course of the 2011/12 season and just before the end of the season can justifiably hope for promotion to the top division.

Despite serving four years at Reading, McDermott was fired in March 2013 after a streak of four straight defeats.

On April 13, 2013 he took over the coaching position at the English second division club Leeds United.

On May 31, 2014, the new owner of the club announced the separation from McDermott.
