1947 stamps from the Saarland

After the Second World War , Saarland was a (partially) autonomous country under the protectorate of France from December 1947 until the end of 1956 . Since it was economically attached to France (until July 1959), the French franc was the currency.

The 1947 stamp year of the Saarland comprised two series with 20 and 13  definitive stamps ; Special stamps were not issued. The first series appeared from January 20, 1947 in the currency pfennig and mark. From November 20, 1947, the Franc was introduced as a currency in the Saar Protectorate; this made new postage stamps necessary. From this date on, 13 of the 20 values ​​in the “Saar I” issue were printed as “Saar II” in centimes and francs. New stamps appeared only from April 1, 1948 with the series "Saar III".

Remarks

1. ↑ Only a few stamps of the Saar I series were overprinted, the significantly larger proportion are new Saar II prints of the stamps, which also differ optically and in details. For the philatelist, the stamps are divided into the numbers xxxI (original) and xxxII (reprint), the latter are given in the illustrations.
