After the Second World War , Saarland was a (partially) autonomous country under the protectorate of France from December 1947 until the end of 1956 . Since it was economically attached to France (until July 1959), the French franc was the currency.

The 1948 stamp year of the Saarland comprised 10  special stamps , 13 definitive stamps and 2 stamp blocks . Block 1 contained 4 postage stamps, which were not perforated and could not be used individually for franking . The postage stamp of Block 2, on the other hand, was perforated and could also be used without the edge of the block.
