use

"Seljonka" bottles

Basic Green 1 was widely used in biochemistry . The brilliant green bile medium is used for the selective enrichment and counting of coliform bacteria in milk, water and other samples. It is a mesomeric stabilized quaternary ammonium salt .

Basic Green 1 is used for dyeing and printing textiles, leather and paper as well as in printing inks, inks, ribbons and ballpoint pen pastes.

In Eastern Europe and the countries of the former USSR , the alcoholic solution of Basic Green 1 ( Solutio viridis nitentis spirituosa 1% ) is used as an antiseptic . In everyday language the substance is called Russian зелёнка "seljonka". A Seljonka attack is a form of protest, provocation or violent attack on a person that is doused with the green color solution mainly on the face. In the 2010s this was widespread in Russia and Ukraine . As a result, the seljonka - and the green color in general - became a symbol of political protest in Russia.
