Heimdall hands Freyja the brise name

The Brisingamen [Edda: Brîsînga men = "Brisingorum monile", according to Grimm von der Wurzel mhd . brîsen = to pierce to derive] is the necklace of the Germanic goddess Freya . It is said to have been looped from pierced joints. Freya got it from four dwarfs . Loki stole the jewelry, but Heimdall took it away again. Little is known about the Brisingamen. Freya never showed it to the human race. However, there are numerous replicas that have been found by archaeologists. The Brisingamen enhanced Freya's magical powers and was an important item in her magic.

The legend of the Brisingamen

The Brisinger (Bristlinger), whose identity is unclear, are named as the previous owners of the Brisingamen . This precious collar was forged by the four dwarfs (Dvergr) Alfrigg , Dvalin , Grerr and Berlingr . In order to get Brisingamen, Freyja had to spend a night with each of these dwarfs. This displeased Odin , who forced the goddess of love to wage war in the human world. This is perhaps a reference to the passionate side of love, where happiness and sadness are close together - without love, no hate. On behalf of Odin, Loki stole this necklace from Freyja; Loki is therefore also called "Brîsîngs Þiofr" by poets. Brisingamen is associated with the Bifröst rainbow bridge , the connection between heaven and earth. On Freyja's neck, brisingamen became a symbol of the fruits of heaven and earth. Freyja gave the earth treasures whenever she cried. When her tears hit rocks, they turned to gold; if they fell into the water, they turned to amber. The Brisingamen later passed into the possession of the two Harlungen -Brüder Edgar and Ake, sons of the Duke Ake Harlungertrost that after a reading of Odin himself, according to another tradition by her uncle Ermanarich among other things of this property were murdered for.

According to the Brandenburg historian Otto Tschirch , the legend ascribes prominent land elevations, such as the Harlunger Berg in Brandenburg an der Havel , that the Brisingamen was deposited in them.

The Brisingamen has related ancestors in the necklace of Harmonia , a daughter of Aphrodite , whom Hephaestus forged.
