Bromic acid is a chemical compound of the elements bromine , oxygen and hydrogen with the formula HBrO 3 . Their salts are the bromates .

Extraction and presentation

They can be represented by reacting barium bromate with dilute sulfuric acid . The barium sulfate , which is sparingly soluble, precipitates out and the bromic acid remains in solution.

It belongs to the halogenated oxygen acids and is related to chloric acid and iodic acid and, like these, has a pyramidal structure. It is a strong oxidizing agent and is therefore used for redox titrations. It is also important in Belousov-Zhabotinsky reactions .

Bromic acid is not a very stable acid and can only be represented in an aqueous solution. From a content of 50%, decomposition occurs:
