Bruce McEwen
Bruce Sherman McEwen (born January 17, 1938 in Fort Collins , Colorado , † January 2, 2020 ) was an American neurophysiologist and neuroendocrinologist at Rockefeller University .
McEwen is best known for his work on the influence of stress and sex hormones on the brain , especially on the hippocampus and amygdala . Together with Elliot Stellar he developed the concept of allostatic load ( allostatic load ), the total load of an individual with repeated or chronic stress and the structural "costs" of stress for the individual concerned.
McEwen earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Oberlin College in 1959 and a Ph.D. from Alfred E. Mirsky at Rockefeller University in 1964. in cell biology . As a postdoctoral fellow he worked at the Institute for Neurobiology in Gothenburg and with Neal E. Miller at Rockefeller University. First, McEwen received a position as Assistant Professor of Zoology at the University of Minnesota in early 1966, but went back to Rockefeller University in mid-1966 - also as an Assistant Professor . Here he became an associate professor in 1971 and was given a full professorship in 1981.
Bruce McEwen was a member of the Faculty of 1000 in Physiology . In 1994 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1997 a member of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1996/1997 he was President of the Society for Neuroscience . Awards he received include the Pasarow Award for Neuropsychiatry (2005), the Neuronal Plasticity Prize (2010), and the Endocrine Regulation Prize (2017).
