action

Lars is advised by his superior in the Danish Army to forego the planned promotion. There are unofficial complaints about his behavior outside the barracks area and the soldiers have no respect for him. Therefore, he could not rise to a management position as planned.

He quits the service and returns to his parents' house with a dominant mother and a silent father. In the evening he meets up with friends and two right-wing extremists who have been invited show up. Jimmy and Michael polemic against Iraqi asylum seekers who live in the nearby asylum seekers home. Lars goes on a confrontational course and insults them as failures and idiots.

Jimmy, who is also a former soldier, obviously doesn't like him, but Michael, who is the leader of the neo-Nazi group, is very impressed with him. He personally invites him to the solstice celebration (St. Hans) of his Nazi group on the beach. Lars attends the party and is courted by Michael. Jimmy's drug addict brother Patrick has built a witch doll that is supposed to represent a Muslim woman and that is burned at the stake.

Days later, Lars 'mother, who is a city councilor, is outraged that an asylum seekers' home was attacked by right-wing extremists. Lars provokes her by saying that it was him. At night he stands in front of Michael's door with his backpack. He quarters him the next morning with Jimmy, who is not very enthusiastic, but submits to the hierarchy. After a few days they get along well and work together to renovate a holiday home owned by Ebbe, the political leader of the Nazi group. Erotic tension develops between the two. They sleep together after a dinner with lots of wine. The next morning there is an awkward silence between them. Nevertheless, the love affair between the two continues. Officially, they continue to repair the detached house and Jimmy trains Lars in Nazi propaganda.

At a group meeting, Ebbe forbids further attacks on "fagots" as this harms the Nazi organization. Lars provokes the group (and especially Jimmy) with the statement that Ernst Röhm was gay. In the evening in the pub, Jimmy provokes an Iraqi massively and deliberately, so that he beats him up. Lars and Patrick bring him back to the beach house together. Patrick, who is already jealous and jealous of Lars because he was preferred to him and should receive full membership of the neo-Nazis, then secretly observes them both through the window and sees two men lying almost naked in bed and hugging.

A few days later, Patrick confronts his brother, who cannot deny the love affair, but does not admit it either. Patrick then visits Michael. Then Ebbe unexpectedly appears in his holiday home and asks how far the renovation work is. You can see an unmade bed in which two people apparently slept.

At the next group meeting, Jimmy and Lars are told that Michael will surprise them. Both are driven to an unknown location by Michael in the minibus. Lars tries to escape, but is held. On the meadow by the water tower, both are then beaten up by several Nazis. Jimmy is awakened from his faint to watch his lover get bloodied. Then he is forced to brutally beat Lars himself with a knife on the throat, which he does. When the Nazi squad disappears, he breaks down crying and begging for an apology.

A few days later they both decide to go away together. While they are loading their car in the dark, Jimmy is stabbed several times in the stomach by a neo-Nazi.

Jimmy is in a coma in the hospital and is visited by his brother and Lars. It's not clear if he'll ever wake up again. Patrick leaves the hospital and attends a party of his neo-Nazi friends, at which the stabber is also present.

criticism

“Consistently told from the perspective of the main characters, the film introduces their view of the world in order to then have it deconstruct itself through the emotional development of the characters. It convinces as an excellently played, dynamic love drama full of gentle poetry, conveying between excesses of violence and quiet, soulful moments. "

“Donato stages the love story in a few words. It is the strong images that give it its intensity. Noises also play an important role in this film. Only in the scenes in which the neo-Nazis meet a lot is spoken, empty words that only serve to stimulate and constantly indoctrinate. In this way the director creates two rooms, Jimmy's and Lars interior, which is insanely fragile, and the cruel neo-Nazi world that surrounds them. A film that gets to the core and guarantees that nobody in the audience will leave you indifferent. "
