The Brunau is a small, 10.3 km long river in the district of Heidekreis in the Lüneburg Heath . It rises south of Niederhaverbeck in the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve . At Hützel , a district in the north-east of Bispingen , it flows generally eastward on the left into the Luhe , which it clearly exceeds there in terms of surface catchment area and length.
The water quality of the Brunau deteriorates on its course, in the north from Bispingen to the confluence with the Luhe, from quality class II: moderately polluted, to quality class II - III: critically polluted.
In its catchment area is the Steingrund , the largest closed juniper stand in the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve. The Brunautal rest area on the A 7 is named after the stream . Above the motorway crossing it, the Brunau is dammed into a lake , which, together with the long steep bank on the northern side of the valley, makes the Brunau valley tourist attractions.
