History of publication

The first edition of Communism and Class Struggle was published in October 1973, followed by the 1974 and 1975 volumes with quarterly publication, a volume of up to 80 pages and a circulation of up to 15,000 copies. In this theoretical organ more detailed articles could appear mostly by KBW functionaries for which there was not enough space available in the Communist People's Newspaper (KVZ), the central organ of the KBW. From the 4th year KuK appeared with eight issues a year. The volume of the issues was limited to 48 pages and the price for the single issue was reduced from 4.00  DM to 2.00 DM. The stated circulation had meanwhile dropped to 10,000 copies. From 1977 to the end of 1982, KuK was published monthly. From no. 9/1977 onwards, the magazine's cover pictures adorned, as the KBW now had numerous artists at its disposal. With No. 7/1978 Jürgen Klocke replaced Joscha Schmierer as the responsible editor , since 8/1978 there has been separate page counting for each issue. From 1979 onwards, the title of the magazine appeared only in small print under the name of the central organ of the Communist People's Newspaper on the richly illustrated covers with a red border. KuK now appeared in the Illustrated format, four columns with an altered type area "and smaller font size, thereby reading any longer theoretical article immediately made a misery ".

In KuK No. 6 (June) 1980 the discontinuation of the magazine according to the decision of the Central Committee of May 25, 1980 was announced. In future, the theoretical organ should appear on only two pages within the framework of the CPC. After eliminating the ZK majority, which a little later founded the Bund Westdeutscher Kommunisten (BWK), this decision was repealed and the following edition appeared as double issue 7-8 / 1980. In issues 9 (September) and 10 (October) materials on the division of the KBW were published. With the first issue of the 9th year in 1981, Communism and Class Struggle appeared in A5 oversized format, with a new type area, normal-sized font and a length of 88 to 96 pages. Further innovations were the opening of the magazine towards a discussion body in which not only the opinion of the KBW was disseminated. With No. 2/1981 the names of the members of the editorial board were mentioned. The price per issue was increased to 4.00 DM (later 6.00 DM), the circulation fell to 6,000 and was later no longer stated. From No. 10 it was "Theoretical Journal " and from No. 12 it was published by the " Federal Management of the KBW".

Because of the negative circulation development and the decline in personnel of the KBW, communism and class struggle had to be stopped at the end of 1982. The municipality is regarded as the successor magazine .

content

As the theoretical organ of the Communist League of West Germany, Communism and Class Struggle only published the political opinion of this organization and its Central Committee for a long time. With a few exceptions, the articles that were written by KBW officials on various topics were mostly commissioned work. This only changed some time after the KBW split up in the summer of 1980, when other opinions could also be published in KuK .

In the last two years of its publication, some previously expressed assessments have been revised, including the party's policy as well as the “sectarian attitude in the cultural field”. In KuK as in other KBW publications were z. B. Bertolt Brecht , Heinrich Heine and Alfred Döblin have been tried by way of example.

effect

The best-known article in KuK is likely to have been the review of Daniel Cohn-Bendit's book The Great Bazaar in No. 6, September 1976, pp. 286–288 under the title Cohn-Bendit's Praise of Rot by jk .
