Bruno Barthel
Bruno Barthel (born February 27, 1885 in Lohmen ; † February 23, 1956 there ) was a Saxon dialect poet and local researcher .
Life
Bruno Barthel was born the son of a stone breaker . He grew up with 13 siblings, first in Lohmen , later in neighboring Uttewalde in Saxon Switzerland . After his school days he worked as a farmhand and cow boy , later as a house boy and hotel servant in Bad Schandau , and as a factory worker and street cleaner in Dresden .
In the First World War he lost three brothers. The war had a lasting impact on him, so that he moved back to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . Like his father, he worked as a stone breaker and dealt a lot with botany , geology , zoology , regional history and the dialect of his homeland. Increasingly he devoted himself to writing. Bruno Barthel died in 1956 four days before his 71st birthday. His grave is in the Lohmen cemetery.
After his death a hiking trail leading from Uttewalde through what is now the Saxon Switzerland National Park to Rathewalde was named after him.
Writing
The best-known book by Bruno Barthel, Im di Bastei rim (“Around the Bastion ”), which was first published in 1935, contains stories written in Saxon - Upper Lusatian dialect that deal with the life and customs of the common people in his homeland .
In the posthumously published book Von den Steinbrechern im Elbe Sandstone Mountains , Bruno Barthel describes the life and work of the stone breakers in the sandstone quarries .
