Under his leadership, the developer rose to become the leading European and third-largest game publisher worldwide and expanded through numerous acquisitions, which, however, were bought with numerous debts, which ultimately drove the company into a severe financial crisis. In December 2004, he handed over the office to James Caparro, who, however, resigned after only six months, whereupon Bonnell temporarily took over the management again. In September 2006, David Pierce took over the position of CEO and President of Atari, Inc. from Bonnell. On April 5, 2007, Bonnell finally resigned from his remaining offices within the group. His departure from the company was generally well received on the stock exchange, on the day of the announcement the value of the shares rose by 24%.
