Johan Bruyneel (* 23. August 1964 in Izegem , Belgium ) is a former Belgian professional - cyclist and cycling manager who for his involvement in the doping affair of the disqualified Tour de France -Siegers Lance Armstrong was banned for life.

Career

Bruyneel was a professional cyclist between 1989 and 1998. During this time he won a total of 29 bike races , including two stages of the Tour de France .

After finishing his career as a driver, he became the sporting director of the US Postal Service team (later Discovery Channel ) around Lance Armstrong . During this time Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times .

After the team dissolved, he was hired by the Astana team . For the 2010 season he switched to the newly founded RadioShack team , which was integrated into the Leopard Trek team for the 2012 season . He took over the function of general manager in the merged RadioShack-Nissan team .

In October 2012 the US anti-doping agency USADA published the results of its doping investigation in the Armstrong case. The report stated that the Bruyneel-led US Postal Team (later the Discovery Channel) ran the most demanding, professional and successful doping program in sports history. Basis were u. a. incriminating statements from eleven former drivers on his team, including Frankie Andreu , Tyler Hamilton , George Hincapie , Floyd Landis and Levi Leipheimer , describing the use of erythropoietin (EPO), blood transfusions, testosterone and other prohibited substances and methods in the team. On October 22nd, the UCI , the World Cycling Federation , canceled all of Armstrong's doping results since August 1st, 1998, including all seven Tour de France victories.

As a result, the operator of the RadioShack-Nissan team decided to part with Bruyneel at the end of October 2012.

In April 2014, Bruyneel was banned from the American Arbitration Association AAA for ten years because of his role in the Armstrong Affair on indictment by the US anti-doping agency USADA . The World Anti-Doping Authority WADA appealed against this judgment, and in October 2018 he was sentenced to life in suspension.

In 2018, Washington federal court sentenced Bruyneel to a fine of $ 369,000 and redress of $ 1.2 million following a US Postal lawsuit.
