Bryan Barry Helmer (born July 15, 1972 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player on the position of defender who has played predominantly in the American Hockey League during his career .

Career

Bryan Helmer played during his junior years from 1989 to 1993 in the lower class Canadian junior leagues. Although he had only played six games in the Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls during this time , the undrawn defender was before the beginning of the 1993/94 season of the Albany River Rats , for which he was in the 1993-1998 for a total of five years American Hockey League played, committed.

Although he was signed on July 10, 1994 by the New Jersey Devils as a free agent , but he never played for the team. On July 17, 1998, the Phoenix Coyotes also signed him as a free agent. On December 19 of the same year he was handed over to the St. Louis Blues because the salary cap was exceeded . After two years in St. Louis, the defender got a contract with the Vancouver Canucks . For Vancouver he played in the 2002/03 season for the first and only time in the playoffs for the Stanley Cup . In exchange for Martin Grenier , the Canadian was given to his ex-club Phoenix Coyotes on July 25, 2003. Since he sustained a shoulder injury in training camp, he missed most of the 2003/04 season.

In the summer of 2004, Helmer was signed by the Detroit Red Wings . During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , he played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Grand Rapids Griffins , for which he was active even after the resumption of the NHL game operations. After he had never played for their NHL team in his two years in Detroit, the defender was signed for the third time by the Phoenix Coyotes in the summer of 2006. The following two years, however, he played again exclusively in the AHL for their farm team, the San Antonio Rampage .

In the summer of 2008, Helmer signed a contract with the Washington Capitals farm team , the Hershey Bears from the AHL. After he began the 2008/09 season with the Bears, he was committed to several serious injuries by the Capitals on November 28, 2008 and recalled from the Hershey Bears team. He won the Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons . Subsequently, however, his contract with the Capitals was not extended. In January 2011, he signed a contract with the Oklahoma City Barons .

A few days later he scored three points in a 7-2 win against the Peoria Rivermen and broke the four-year-old record for the most points scorer of a defensive player, which had previously held John Slaney . In his 986th game of the regular season in the American Hockey League, Helmer reached his 520th scorer point, surpassing Slaney, who had brought it to 519 points in 631 games of the regular season in the AHL . Before the end of the 2010/11 season, Helmer reached another milestone in his career and was only the seventh player in history to play his 1000th AHL game in the regular season.
