Buddy Burton
William Evans "Buddy" Burton junior (born February 1890 in Louisville (Kentucky) ; † July 6, 1976 there ) was an American blues and jazz musician ( drums , washboard , piano , vocals , also celesta , kazoo ), who also worked as a band leader.
Live and act
Burton was from Louisville, Kentucky, from where he moved to Chicago around 1922. In October 1923 he had a first recording session as a member of Jelly Roll Morton's Jazz Band (" Someday Sweetheart ", Okeh Records ). He participated in several of Morton's early recordings with smaller ensembles in the years that followed, and also worked with Jimmy Blythe's State Street Ramblers . In 1928 Burton played under his own name as a pianist / singer for Paramount Records ("Ham-Fatchet Blues") and Gennett Records ("It's No One But You") five records; another two in a duo with Blythe. In 1932 he played with the Memphis Night Hawks , which included Kid Sheik Cola , Roy Palmer and Darnell Howard ("Sweet Feet", Vocalion ); he also recorded duos with Bob Hudson . It was not until 1936 that Burton made further recordings for Bluebird Records with singer Irene Sanders (“New Block and Tackle”).
Little is known about his subsequent life; he returned to his hometown in 1965 and is said to have died in 1976 in a self-inflicted rifle shot in Louisville. In the field of jazz he was involved in 48 recording sessions from 1923 to 1936. a. with Junie Cobb , Lovie Austin , Ida Cox , Ozie McPherson , Jimmy O'Bryant , Alexander Robinson , Tillie Johnson and Mae Mathews . He wrote the number "Buddy Burton's Jazz", which was played by Blythe's Washboard Band (1926, with Burton and Johnny Dodds ), later by The Mojo Jazzin 'Five ( South Side Chicago Style , 1984) and the Swedish Jazz Kings (with Bent Persson , 1994) was recorded.
