The Buffalo Bill State Park is a state park near the town of Cody in Park County , east of Yellowstone National Park in the US state of Wyoming . The center of the park is the Buffalo Bill Reservoir , a water reservoir on the Shoshone River . The park is named after William Frederick Cody , better known as Buffalo Bill .

history

William Cody stayed in the region around the present town of Cody since the 1870s, which he founded in 1896. In 1905, work began on the dam on land that the US federal government had acquired in part from William Cody. Work on the dam lasted until 1910. At that time, the dam was around 100 meters (32 feet) the highest in the world. The dammed water was used for irrigation and from 1922 to generate electricity.

In 1957, the tourist infrastructure along the banks of the reservoir was expanded and the state park was established. Starting in 1985, the dam was raised by 8 meters (25 feet), increasing the water reservoir by 260,000 acre-feet . As a result, the tourist infrastructure on the extended shoreline had to be rebuilt, this lasted until 1993. Also in 1993 a privately operated visitor center was opened.

Tourist use

The Buffalo Bill State Park mainly offers recreational opportunities in and around the water: fishing, boating, hiking and camping. There are two campsites available for overnight stays. The park is accessible from US Highway 20 .
