The Buffalo Bisons are a minor league baseball team from Buffalo , New York , which is represented in the International League (IL). The bison are the AAA team of the Toronto Blue Jays and play their home games at Coca-Cola Field in Downtown Buffalo. Before the bisons became part of the Jays organization, they belonged to the Cleveland Indians (1983-1984, 1987, 1995-2008), Pittsburgh Pirates (1979-1982, 1988-1994), Chicago White Sox (1985-1986) and the New York Mets (2009-2012).

Eastern League (1979-1984)

From 1979, the bisons were active for three seasons as the AA farm team of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Eastern League. With the introduction of the playoffs in 1980, the team made it to the semi-finals, which they lost to the Holyoke Millers. In the remaining years the success was manageable. After the team was taken over by the Cleveland Indians, the advance to the semi-finals succeeded again in 1983.

American Association (1985-1997)

For the 1985 season, the bison rose to the AAA level and then played until the league was discontinued in the American Association. In the first two years this happened for the organization of the Chicago White Sox and in 1987 again for one year for the Cleveland Indians. From the season 1988 the team was then again active for seven years under the flag of the Pirates. The first two finals also take place at this time. 1990 and 1991 took part in the championship series, but lost both finals. The first against the Denver Zephyrs and the second against the Oklahoma City 89ers. For the last three years in the American Association, the Buffalo bison were again part of the Cleveland Indians. In the last regular season in 1997, the bisons won their first championship by beating the Iowa Cubs 3-0.

International League (since 1998)

Still active for the Indians, the bisons started in the International League in 1998. In the very first year they won the title again, this time against the Durham Bulls. In the 1998 newly introduced Triple-A World Series , in which the champions of the International League and the Pacific Coast League competed against each other, they lost to the New Orleans Zephyrs. The next title in the International League came in 2004, by beating the Richmond Braves. The Buffalo Bisons have been part of the Toronto Blue Jays since the 2013 season.
